North Idaho Ranching
A tradition remembered
North Idaho has been home to generations
of ranchers beyond remembrance. Early pioneers
carved cattle and horse pastures from the densely forested
valley's and hills; building homes and sturdy
barns of log, heavy timber, stone and metal.
Vegetable gardens and fruit orchards were also created on these
lands, to no small measure of appreciation by the local
wildlife. Whitetail deer, elk, moose, wild turkey,
red-tail hawk, ring-neck pheasant, quail, American eagles
and the occasional brown bear - all continue to
co-habitat the region.
Coeur d'Alene beginnings
In the late 1800's a frontier post was
established by the U.S. Army on the North Shore of Lake
Coeur d'Alene at its' confluence with the Spokane
River. The post drew new settlers into what is now
the downtown area of Coeur d'Alene. Business and
trades were established. Wealthy barons built grand
Victorian and Colonial homes that co-existed with the
frontier ranches - creating a new landscape. A
land of plenty and a heart of all, North was on the map
if still off the grid.
Tradition -vs- The New
Deal As North Idaho prospered and
grew, the old ranches broke up into smaller ranches,
many which still exist on the outskirts of Coeur
d'Alene. Few however, remain within the
city. Today, Coeur d'Alene is ablaze with urban growth; beautiful and
thoughtful for the most part. One cannot help but
behold the newness and richness of it all, but something is being lost
too. A tradition renewed convenient.
